Terminacion

If two instances make a pattern, we may have defined a ritual practice associated with terminating temple structures at the site. On top of Structure 13M-1 we encountered a broken strombus shell in the rubble fill that elevated the now destroyed final floor from the penultimate construction phase. In this earlier floor we found a small cyst with a complete strombus shell and two miniature ceramic vessels. The stratigraphic context of the cyst offering indicates that the offering was cached late in the occupation of that floor level, likely associated with the termination of the structure. The fragmented shell in the rubble above the floor suggest that a second act of termination was to break a second shell in the final expansion of the temple. This combination of caching and smashing is also seen in the offering associated with Structure 12L-1, in which one obsidian eccentric was left complete while the second was snapped in pieces prior to deposition. I’d be interested in hearing if anyone else knows of similar examples of caching and smashing as part of Mesoamerican termination rituals.
